Worried about My Daughter Dating with a Man with a Serious Disease

My daughter, who is in her late 30s, is dating with a man suffering from a serious disease. I don’t want her to marry him, because I am afraid that it might get her into trouble. At the same time, because of her age, I am starting to feel impatient.  (Female in her 70s)

It is quite natural for a mother to wish for her daughter’s happiness, and also for a daughter to hope to make her parents assured. Nonetheless, if the both parties’ feelings don’t come together, it shows that they are not making sufficient conversations.

There are many families whose members go off the path, unaware of the principles about the family.
The thoughts of the parents don’t reach the hearts of the children, and the children don’t speak of their thoughts to their parents ―with their relations only superficial.
Be a person who lives by the teachings of Kami.
The more you do so, the more harmonized your family becomes, allowing the kokoro(appearance) of the family members to shine bright.

Family members need to communicate with one another constantly and share anything that’s on their minds. “The principle about the family” means a family relation where their true thoughts and feelings can be communicated. When family members can get involved this way, they can help and cooperate with one another willingly―with their hearts coming together as one because they understand one another.

What you must do now is to listen very carefully to your daughter’s thoughts and understand her. Having a family while carrying an illness takes a strong affection that will allow them to overcome various things. Communicate your concerns to your daughter in a way she can accept them. The importance is to talk to her with a supportive attitude.

When her parent respects and cherishes her thoughts, the daughter will try to live up to her mother’s love. Talk it out as a family, and live life supporting each other.
